"Angular Record" Record Labels

Angular Recording Corporation was conceived in the June 2003 by two young men both called Joe: "Whilst wandering in a park in South London, we discovered an obsolete 'Triangulation Station' that belonged to the Ordnance Survey. We took this as a sign that they should also attempt to 'plot a map', albeit a musical one rather than a geographic one. We took the name Angular (and the acronym ARC) from the glossary on the O.S. website. Angular is not to do with guitar sounds or haircuts. It represents our interest in elementary geometry."

The initial start up funding was secured through Joe M taking part in medical trials for a new cancer drug. Unfortunately that drug has not gone into production. Fortunately for us however, this was enough to pay for our first CD. The release was 'The New Cross' compilation album, featuring the first recorded appearances from future stars Bloc Party and the Rough Trade re-released Art Brut track 'Formed A Band'. Little did we know that this album of local talent would win 'Compilation of the Year 2004' in NME, and spawn the media hyped 'New Cross Scene'.

2005/06 saw the label go from strength to strength, releasing debut singles and EPs by The Long Blondes, Klaxons, The Violets, The Lodger, and These New Puritans (as well as snaring some more trig points). Joe D also found time to coin the joke genre 'New Rave' while in Deptford library with Klaxons songwriter Jamie Reynolds. 2006 ended with the rapturously received third compilation 'Future Love Songs'.

2007/08 saw the consolidation of the label: Leading the way from the fringes of the underground with new, exciting, envelope-pushing pop; we released long players by These New Puritans, The Long Blondes, The Lodger, The Violets, Wetdog and Je Suis Animal. We also found time to strike up an informal 'Special Relationship' with legendary label Domino (who, naturally delighted, Signed 'Wild Beasts' on our advice). Joe D also ended up playing bass for Klaxons in the summer of 07 when Jamie Reynolds broke an important limb on an on-stage mishap.

In 2009 Angular continues to release the finest pop music we can find; the weird, the audacious and the remarkable music which all pop fans know can revolutionise your everyday life. Adhering all the while to our anti-principals of irrationality, refusal and triangulation.
